DANGEROUS DOGS IN SPAIN.

In Spain, ALL dogs considered as dangerous, as per the Spanish dangerous dogs list, must have a minimum third party liability insurance by law. Get caught with a dog named on the list or a mixed breed of the same without liability insurance, and you could be fined up to €120,000. Don't take the risk! Third party Liability insurance costs less than €100 a year!

You must have your dangerous dog covered by a third party liability insurance within 3 months of bringing the dog to Spain or within 1 month if you acquire the dog in Spain. Considering the amount of paperwork and documentation needed, you will need to start now!

Any person, or dog walker or dog handlers of potentially dangerous dogs, (Perros Potencialmente Peligrosos or PPP) must have an appropriate license and be registered with the local town hall or Municipality.

WHAT IS CONSIDERED A DANGEROUS DOG IN SPAIN?

Again, some regions have some differences. Basically any dog that has had, or has the potential to bite someone, is considered to be dangerous. Any dog over 20 Kilograms in weight is also considered to ba a dangerous dog in Spain. Any cross breeds that contain any of the above are also considered as potentially dangerous dogs. However, there is a basic list for reference that specifically names the breeds as follows ; -

  • Pit Bull and Bull Breeds
  • Canary Island Prey Dogs
  • Caucasian Shepherd
  • Doberman
  • Corsican Can
  • All Mastiffs
  • Brazilian Fila
  • Bordeaux
  • Rottweiler
  • German Shepherds
  • All dogs over 20 kilos in weight.
  • Crossbreeds of any of the above.

For some breeds that are not on the above list, anything over 20  Kilograms is classified as dangerous. If it has strong musculature, is powerful and strong, has short hair, a deep chest, big square head, wide skull and strong jaws or a muscled neck, and any dog that has a track record of being aggressive towards human beings and other animals, must be licenced and registered with the local authorities.

HOW TO REGISTER A DANGEROUS DOG IN SPAIN.

If you own a dangerous dog you require a dangerous dog license from your Local Municipality. As there are many autonomous regions in Spain, and each region or Province have their own rules, you will need to check with them to see what process they adhere to and what the minimum liability insurance is required. You will need to take your Dangerous dog to a Vet and have it evaluated. This evaluation requires the owner to be in attendance, as your relationship with your dangerous dog, and your abilities to handle a dangerous dog. will also be tested. Physicological testing is considered essential when issuing a licence to have a dangerous dog.

Note.  These tests are all done in Spanish and the forms will need completing in Spanish. The Vet may offer to help, bearing in mind that you will have to pay the Vet for the test. Once you have this test completed, you will then need to register the dangerous dog with the local town hall.

RENEWAL OF YOUR DANGEROUS DOG LICENCE IN SPAIN.

DANGEROUS DOG OWNER LICENCE APPLICATION.

All dangerous dog applicants must be over the age of 18. You can make this application to own a dangerous dog at your Local Municipality. You will need the following documents ;-

1. Residence card, NIE (Foriegners proof of residency) or passport as proof of identity.

2. Proof of being mentally and physically capable of handling and looking after a dangerous dog. (The Vet you take your dog too to be assessed will conduct this test, if authorised, or send you to a center that will test your physical and physicological aptitude and issue a certificate of competence). This certificate must be less than 12 months old at the time of the application.

3. A liability insurance contract of at least the minimum cover for the regions required liability insurance.

4. Proof that all the vaccinations are up to date.

5. Proof that the dog is Microchipped.

6. Proof that the dog is or has attended a training school. (Not all Municipalities require this).

DANGEROUS DOG LIABILITY DIFFERENCES BY AUTONOMOUS REGIONS.

As ALL Spanish regions don't apply the same rules, the minimum liability insurance required is €120,000 up to €300,000. There is not a lot of difference in the premiums, a few Euros, so we always advocate taking out the highest cover you can to cover any region in Spain.

Why?  As dangerous dog insurance specialists for over 18 years in Spain, we have the knowledge and expertise to advise on these matters. If you live in a region where you need minimum liability cover of €120,000 and you are traveling to a region that requires a minimum of €175,000, you will be under insured. A third parrty liability insurance policy with €300,000 of cover is less than €100 a year. You might consider this to be over insured if you are in a region that only requires €120,000 of cover to be legal. Our experience has shown that when a claim is made against damages caused by a dangerous dog, whether the incident is fatal or not, €300,000 soon gets used up in litigation fees and compensation. It's just not worth the risk.

WALKING A DANGEROUS DOG IN SPAIN.

Most Autonomous regions require that all dangerous dogs are muzzled at all times in public and be on a lead of not more than 2 Metres (1 Metre in some regions) Only one dog per person, and you are not permitted in any parks that cater for children or any form of playground or public recreational area.

Any dog walker, handler or dog sitter must also have a licence to handle a dangerous dog and you must take your licences with you when you take the dog for a walk.
